Fostering an Optimistic Outlook…with a Bit of Pessimism for Good Measure!

Jul 26, 2016

“In optimism there is magic. In pessimism there is nothing.”

—Abraham Hicks

Are you an optimist or a pessimist? Glass half full or half empty? Many of us may identify as optimists, but even the most optimistic people often have a bit of a pessimistic streak. And the truth is, some degree of pessimism may not be such a bad thing. A good balance between the two may actually be best. Here’s why:

We need to be prepared to deal with disappointment at some point in our lives. Life always throws curve balls our way, and being completely unprepared to deal with circumstances that aren’t stellar is a bad plan.

This isn’t to say that we should expect disappointment. Rather, being prepared for a plan to go south or something to go wrong allows you to plan ahead. Thinking about a Plan B in some situations isn’t a bad thing. It often makes sense to have a backup plan when it comes to big life changes or circumstances, rather than putting all your eggs in one basket. But temper this level of pessimism with optimism, hoping for the best in every situation. This fosters an attitude of optimism but allows for resilience when things don’t go exactly as we had planned.
